I Am Clever

A Fine Line - Between Chaos and Creation

Everybody seems to think I'm lazy; I don't mind, I think they're crazy...

NaBloPoMo 2018 - Day Five
As I'm sure you've noticed over the past many years, I tend to make a joke or reference to Guy Fawkes Day every Day Five of NaBlo (well, every year except 2010 and 2016, anyway *squints in those years' general direction*).

I'm not sure how I got into this habit - it's not a holiday we celebrate here in Canada, and my dad never brought it up all that much when I was growing up. I mean, he told us about it and I had functional knowledge of what it consisted of/what it meant, but I didn't end up looking more into the backstory of the Gunpowder Plot until I was an adult and Wikipedia existed for my casual random research purposes.

Maybe it's because my dad had some of his random childhood books around the house, and me being an avid reader decided to pick some of them up and read for myself if the covers looked interesting? Like this one:

Can't blame 10yo me for being curious about a book with this kind of cover. Also, I have just now discovered that it was published in 1937. Holy old book, Batman!

It's a collection of stories about the scarecrow Worzel Gummidge getting into all sorts of trouble, and as I'm sure you can guess by the cover, one of these stories features him trying to pass himself off as a Guy Fawkes dummy to try and get money for himself to buy fireworks (this is my memory trying to fill in the blanks, as I haven't read the book in years, but I promise it's just as ridiculous as it sounds from my terrible description).

Maybe that's what helped cement this random holiday in my mind? Who knows at this point.

Either way, have a safe and fun Guy Fawkes Day!

Ed. note: yes, I'm aware that it's 8 hours ahead in the UK and all celebrations have more than likely completed (unless there's some hardcore partiers at 0230 over there - you do you), but I figure it's worth sharing the sentiment anyway.
